Some of America’s foremost historians - including Bruce Catton, David McCullough, James McPherson and Stephen Sears – tell extraordinary stories of courage, disaster, and triumph in this collection of the best articles from sixty years of American Heritage. The Civil War posed a critical test of the young nation’s character, endurance, and will to survive. Coming only two generations after the nation’s founding, the secession of Southern states challenged the very existence of the United States. “America’s most monumental drama and morality tale” comes alive in this brilliant collection from America’s leading history magazine, as selected by its current editor-in-chief, Edwin S. Grosvenor.

This is not a novel, or a volume of history written about the Civil War, from its beginning to its end. No. This is a collection of articles, written by noted and established historians (McPherson, Sears, et. al.) for American Heritage magazine, each about a different aspect (politics, economics, battles, etc.) of the biggest calamity in the history of America. All are well-written, informative, and thought-provoking. A masterful job of editing by Edwin Grosvenor.Product details

The Best of American Heritage The Civil War Edwin S Grosvenor 9781542344821 Books Reviews
An interesting easy read on a variety of American Civil War historical snap shots. It won't make you an expert on such a huge subject, but could lead to lots more fascinating reading about it.
A collection of very interesting articles about various civil war topics. All taken from the pages of American Heritage and written by leading historians and scholars. All interesting topics, I learned from every story
For those seriously interested in the Civil war this will be a positive experience. The book is a series of essays on a variety of topics from causes to strategies to battles to leaders. Some information is more or less common knowledge but much is a look beyond the headlines at events and participants not in every text book. Enjoy!
This book serves as a great companion piece for any Civil War buff. It is a compilation of chapters written by various noted historians on individual and varied aspects of the war and it's immediate aftermath.
As an avid student of the Civil War I found little new information. But what I did enjoy was a collection of background related stories which helped to "flesh out" many of those leaders, families and supporters who played key roles in the fracturing and repairing of the great country. I would unhesitatingly recommend it for anyone interested in history, but especially for the many Civil War buffs who enjoy looking into the often neglected corners of history.
Solid overview but, there are many, many more that can get deeper into the details both military and political. Both areas are essential to understanding the war and the long and (in my opinion, inevitable clash) and consequent events. For those who are interested it would help to follow up with a study of how the outcomes affected the life of the union and how they still matter today.
I have read many books abut the Civil War and this is one of the best. We are all familiar with Lincoln's assassination and have read and heard it told and retold many times, but this telling by Richard B. Kunhardt is one of the most moving I have ever read. Also there are some wonderful vignettes about unfamiliar or little know people. A book not to be passed up.
